A winery and garden business near Elnora will be easy to find after Red Deer County approved a large sign for the business.

The business owners had applied to place an oversized directional sign on their property at the intersection of Highway 590 and Range Road 230 about five kilometres northeast of Elnora.

Delidais Estate Winery and D&A Gardens wanted a relaxation on the maximum sign size allowed. Their sign would be 5.95 square metres but the maximum allowed under regulations is 4.55 square metres.

It will direct visitors to the U-pick, tree nursery, café and winery 700 metres to the south.

The county’s municipal planning commission, which is comprised of members of council, unanimously approved the relaxation.

“I think the extra size on this is actually great,” said Mayor Jim Wood, saying the unique business is an important one for the county.

“I look at this as not only agricultural but tourism as well.”

Coun. Christine Moore was also enthusiastic about the garden and winery business.

“I think this is a great new, exciting business for our area.”

Delidais Estate Winery offers a wide variety of wines based on black currents, cherries, chokecherries, saskatoons, apples, and rhubarb.
