Red Deer County is set to host a workshop next week designed to help farmers work with their cattle on behaviour.
The event, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Benalto Rodeo Grounds, will feature specialists from across North America who will share tips and tricks to help farmers with one of the most powerful tools they can use for grazing management.
Dylan Biggs, Dave Voth and Joe Engelhart will be present to discuss low-stress handling techniques; how this applies to grazing management around wetlands and sensitive areas and how external stresses like predation have an effect in their health.
“The County is bringing in very knowledgeable experts from Alberta and around North America to show our cattle producers about the benefits of cattle behavior, these techniques may serve useful in their own operations,” said Mayor Jim Wood.
County agricultural manager Cody McIntosh said that the initiative could be a huge benefit for farmers.
“By better understanding our cattle, we can help them trust in their farmers and respond in quick, meaningful ways to our directives,” he said.
“Time, commitment and effort are needed when working with cattle effectively – by only using your body position and movements.”
