Red Deer County staff will investigate the implications of a tax break for residential solar power systems.

Coun. Lonny Kennett proposed the county look into the possibilities of providing a small amount of tax relief after he was approached by ratepayers. They raised concerns that the benefits of installing solar systems and saving on power bills were lost because the upgrades raised their assessments and taxes.

Kennett said another issue to be considered is that solar systems and their panels have a lifespan and lose value over time. Also, new technology is being developed where solar panels look like regular shingles and are a functional part of the roof.

The tax savings would likely be small and it would be intended that people have to apply for the relief. But it is worth taking a look at, he said.

“I think it’s just a single, little thing that we can use to help our residents try something out.”

Council agreed on a motion to send the issue to administration, who will bring back a report later.
