Red Deer cyclist killed in collision with pickup

72-year-old man died in hospital after being injured in Wednesday morning collision

A 72-year-old Red Deer cyclist is dead after a collision with a pickup truck on Wednesday morning.

Red Deer RCMP says they responded to the collision at 40th Avenue and 22nd Street about 10:30 a.m.

The cyclist was transported to hospital by EMS where he succumbed to his injuries.

A 62-year-old Red Deer man was driving the pickup alone was uninjured.

“Red Deer RCMP’s preliminary investigation indicates the pickup truck was travelling northbound on 40th Ave., through a green light,” said RCMP. “The cyclist was riding eastbound on 22nd St., and rode into the crosswalk against a ‘don’t walk’ signal.

“The pickup truck made contact and struck the cyclist in the crosswalk.”

Red Deer Traffic Services are investigating the cause of the fatality along with the assistance of the RCMP collision reconstructionist.

Red Deer RCMP thanked witnesses for their assistance in calling 911, and providing medical attention and support to the cyclist prior to EMS arrival.
