Three families get to celebrate Christmas with a new puppy thanks to a local dog breeder.

Ooodles of Doodles, which is located on the outskirts of Red Deer and breeds goldendoodles, hosted its fourth puppy giveaway earlier this week. During the event on Sunday, Dec. 18, three different families received a free puppy.

It’s “pretty amazing” to see the initial interactions between the families and their new puppy, said Ooodles of Doodles owner Candice Farrell.

“Seeing the puppies with their new families and seeing what a big difference they’re going to make for these kids is wonderful,” Farrell said on Friday.

“I like to give back to people, and this is a way for us to give back and make people happy. I really like to see families that maybe couldn’t afford a puppy and really need something in their lives to make a difference for them.”

The recipient families have to be nominated by someone to be eligible for the puppy giveaway, Farrell explained.

“Typically they’re nominated by another family member or a friend who sees that a they’re going through some hard time sand could use a little bit of joy in their life – which comes in the form of a puppy,” she said.

The nominations were reviewed and three families were chosen.

Goldendoodles are a crossbreed of golden retrievers and poodles.

“They are really nice, happy-go-lucky and beautiful companions,” said Farrell.

“They make really great therapy dogs, they’re a lot of fun and they’re really in tune with people. They enjoy being part of the family.”

In the past five years, there has only been one Christmas where the giveaway didn’t happen – this was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Farrell noted.
