Red Deer drug and sex trade investigation results in nearly 70 charges

Red Deer city RCMP have wrapped up a three-month investigation into drugs and the sex trade that resulted in nearly 70 charges against 31 people.

Red Deer city RCMP have wrapped up a three-month investigation into drugs and the sex trade that resulted in nearly 70 charges against 31 people.

Officers from various crime units initiated the investigation in response to residents’ concerns.

A total of 21 people were charged with communication for the purpose of prostitution. Seven vehicles were seized in connection with the prostitution investigation in downtown Red Deer. Most of the individuals hail from Central Alberta, with a few coming from Calgary.

RCMP also conducted search warrants through the months of June and July. Various drugs were discovered at a motor inn and four residences. Among the miscellaneous items found were bear spray, a shotgun, various other weapons and cash.

Ten people, including a 17-year-old girl, were charged with a total of 48 drug and other criminal charges. Most are from Red Deer, with the exception of a few coming from Winnipeg and Fort McMurray.

Police will give further details during a press conference this afternoon.
