The local Filipino community in Red Deer will celebrate a traditional religious May festival on Saturday.

This will be the second year of Santacruzan in the city. The event is also known as Flores de Mayo (Fowers of May).

A colourful cultural procession at City Hall Park will start at 4 p.m. There will be different characters involved, representing the culture and history of the Phillipines.

The FilCan Seniors Society of Red Deer and the Global Filipino Canadian Culture Society have organized the event, which is open to everyone.

There will some sipa, a traditional Filipino sport involving kicking a ball that dates back to before the Spanish era in the Philippines, and a piñata for young children.

Last year the local event was held at Bower Ponds for the first time.
