Red Deer Games Foundation hands out athlete grants

Grants to help athletes offset cost of training and equipment

The Red Deer Games Foundation has announced six recipients of the Athlete Development Grant.

Those recognized are all athletes living in Red Deer who have demonstrated a high level of ability and a strong commitment to their sport.

“These athletes have achieved competence at the international, national, provincial or regional level and the funds are provided to the athletes to help offset the costs of training and equipment as they continue to pursue their training and competition programs,” says the foundation.

Recipients are:

Cole Bergheim: (Red Deer) Golf – Recent results: Tied 10th 2021 Golf Canada National Fall West Championship; Tied 3rd 2021 Maple Leaf Junior Golf National Championship; Champion 2021 U18 PGA of Alberta Junior Masters; Tied 45th Golf Canada National Junior Boys Championship; Champion U19 Maple Leaf PGA Major Series.

Rilyn Boorman: (Red Deer) Volleyball – member of Hunting Hills High School and Central Alberta Queens Volleyball Club, selected to the 2021 Volleyball Alberta’s 17U Provincial Women’s Volleyball team, shortlisted for Volleyball Alberta’s 2022 Canada Summer Games Volleyball team.

Lauren Junck:(Red Deer) Volleyball – member of Notre Dame High School and Central Alberta Queens Volleyball Club, named to the 2021 Alberta 17U Volleyball Provincial Team, shortlisted for Volleyball Alberta’s 2022 Canada Summer Games Volleyball team.

Jeremiah Lauzon: (Red Deer) Athletics – 2020 NCAA Div.2 GNAC Conference indoor record 200m (broke a 5 yr. old record); 2020 NCAA Div.2 GNAC Conference Indoor Champion 200m; 2020 GNAC Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year Award Winner; 2020 Simon Fraser University Male Athlete of the Year; 2021 Currently ranked 1st in Canada U23 and 7th overall for Open Men; 2021 200M High Performance competitions (Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto) 1st place in all races.

Eileen Park: (Red Deer) Golf – 2021 U13 Alberta Junior Champion; 2021 U19 Alberta Junior 2nd Place (lost in 4 hole playoff); Tied 21st 2021 Canadian Junior Girls Championship; 15 total 2021 Maple Leaf Junior Tour 1st place finishes; Alberta Provincial Team golfer; 2021 Golf Canada National Team Selection Camp attendee.

Luke Weddell: (Red Deer) Volleyball - member of Lindsay Thurber Composite High School (LTCHS) and Central Alberta Kings Volleyball Club/Canada West Volleyball Club; 2x LTCHS Athlete of the Year; selected to the 2021 Volleyball Alberta’s 17U Provincial Men’s Volleyball team; shortlisted for Volleyball Alberta’s 2022 Canada Summer Games Volleyball team.
