A record-breaking 52,060 Smile Cookies were gobbled up in Red Deer to raise $52,060 for the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools’ Reading College program.

One hundred per cent of the money raised from the sale of the $1 cookies from the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign went towards the program that helps elementary students improve their literacy skills.

Reading College returns for 11th year in Red Deer

Foundation board chair Kristine Plastow said the money from cookie sales between Sept. 19 to 25 was almost double the amount raised in 2021.

She was unsure why sales increased so much this year, but maybe more people were just getting out and about again, and that a $1 cookie was easy to purchase.

“We could not offer any of our programs, especially the Reading College, without donors like Tim Hortons. The Smile Cookie Campaign is a wonderful initiative and it brings communities together. It raises much-needed funds and it is fun and delicious,” said Plastow on Tuesday morning when the campaign tally was announced at the Timberlands Tim Hortons.

“We very much appreciate this partnership and I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone in Red Deer who bought cookies.”
