An early morning fire left a home in Red Deer’s Glendale neighbourhood with significant damage.
Red Deer Emergency Services was called to the fire along Glendale Boulevard just before 4 a.m. on Saturday.
“We were called out at about 3:45 (Saturday morning) to a reported vehicle fire outside of a house that had possibly extended to the house,” said Curtis Schaefer, RDES assistant deputy chief.
“The first crew arrived and saw a (pickup) truck outside on fire. The heavy fire had extended to the house’s attached garage. The fire got up into the garage, the attic space and the house.”
Schaefer said there was “significant damage” to the garage and another vehicle that was inside. Additionally there was damage to the attic space and the “main part of the home,” Schaefer said, adding there isn’t an exact damage estimate at this time.
No injuries were reported at the scene.
“Three people were displaced from the home – there were two people upstairs and one person downstairs. Red Cross was assisting them,” said Schaefer.
The fire was extinguished by about 5:30 a.m. RDES workers stayed on the scene until about 7 a.m. to ensure “everything was safe,” Schaefer noted.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighters also responded to a second blaze on Cameron Crescent in the Clearview Meadows neighbourhood just after 7 p.m. on Sunday.
“Upon arrival, the initial crew saw the fire showing from one of the suites of a fourplex. The crew made good progress quickly to knock the fire down and contain it to one suite of the fourplex,” said Schaefer.
The individual in the suite that was on fire alerted the residents of the fourplex and everyone was able to evacuate the building safely.
“It was good action on their part,” Schaefer noted.
No injuries were reported as a result of this fire as well.
“Crews were on scene for approximately two hours, working to clean up and make sure there was no further extension to other parts of the building so the other residents could get back into their suites at the end of the night,” said Schaefer.
There was “extensive damage” in the one suite due to the fire, Schaffer said, adding the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
