A fire at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre this week was deliberately set.

A Red Deer Emergency Services fire inspector said a mattress was set ablaze by a Unit 36 patient.

“It happened on the psychiatric ward of the hospital. The patient had some mental health issues,” said Kim Kivell.

There were no injuries from Wednesday’s 9:20 a.m. incident. Patients in Unit 36 and adjacent wards were evacuated due to smoke and gases from the fire.

Kivell said fire damage was limited to the mattress, bed and flooring of one room.

“There’s a fair amount of damage due to the water from the sprinkler system,” he said, adding it seeped through to the floor below.

Red Deer RCMP Cpl. Sarah Knelsen said no charges have been filed against the patient though the incident remains under investigation.
