A 32-year-old Red Deer man is facing a number of charges after allegedly driving dangerously throughout the city.

On Wednesday, Red Deer RCMP received reports of a possible impaired driver, who reportedly struck numerous vehicles and failed to remain at the scene of the collisions.

Police located the vehicle a short time later. But the driver fled away at a high speed when officers tried to initiate a traffic stop, police claimed in a media release on Thursday.

It was determined the suspect vehicle was reported stolen. It was later located abandoned.

The Red Deer RCMP general investigation section, with the assistance of the general duty unit, police dog services and a RCMP helicopter, located the suspect, who was allegedly driving a second stolen vehicle in a “dangerous manner.”

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested.

The suspect is charged with the following:

  • Possession of property under $5,000
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Failure to comply with a release order
  • Operating a motor vehicle while prohibited
  • Operating a motor vehicle while impaired
  • Resisting arrest
  • Mischief under $5,000
  • Failing to remain at the scene of an accident

He remains in custody ahead of a court appearance set for Friday at 9:30 a.m.

“The Red Deer RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance with reporting the dangerous driving offences, resulting in a safe conclusion,” police said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dash camera video is asked to contact Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2300. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.P3Tips.com or using the P3 TIPS app.
