A preliminary hearing has determined there is enough evidence to hold a trial for a Red Deer man charged with second-degree murder in the death of an 18-month-old boy.

A trial date has not yet been set for Evan Caswell Gilmer, 31, who was charged in connection with the death of Garth Leippi in October 2008. A preliminary hearing took place in Red Deer provincial court this week.

Leippi was injured at a residence near 48th Avenue and 46th Street in Red Deer. RCMP were called to the hospital Oct. 12 after the boy suffering suspicious injuries was brought in by ambulance. He was taken by STARS air ambulance to a Calgary hospital and died the following day.

Gilmer, who was charged in July 2009, was the boyfriend of the child’s mother. He was originally arrested Oct. 12, 2008, but was not charged at that time.
