A 29-year-old Red Deer man has been arrested following a fatal collision in Calgary early Friday morning.

Just after 3 a.m., Calgary Police Service responded to a two-vehicle collision in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail, near 32 Avenue NE.

Upon arrival, police located a severely damaged car and a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck with significant front-end damage. The lone occupant in the driver’s seat of the car was declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford F-150 truck sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the truck was arrested and will be charged with failure or refusal to comply with a demand after an accident causing death, impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

The victim has been identified, but details pertaining to the victim’s identity and vehicle will not be released at this time as investigators are still working to complete next of kin notifications.

“Today’s collision shows the risk of making the wrong decisions,” said collision reconstruction unit Sgt. Colin Foster.

“In this case, it was the decision to drink and drive, and travel the wrong way on a roadway, which sadly resulted in the death of another motorist. The message is clear: do not drink and drive.”

Anyone with information or dashcam footage related to this incident is asked to contact Calgary Police at 403-266-1234. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers as well.
