Red Deer Polytechnic graduates will celebrate their success at convocation later this week.

The event, which is the institution’s first as a polytechnic, will take place at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Friday.

This year, more than 1,480 students are eligible to graduate and almost 500 applied to attend the convocation ceremonies on June 3.

In addition to the wide range of credentials students will receive, this year marks the first graduating classes from RDP’s own degrees, including the Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Applied Arts in Animation and Visual Effects.

During the afternoon ceremony, the Governor General’s Academic Medal (Collegiate Bronze Level) will be presented to the student with the highest academic standing after completing the final year of a diploma-level post-secondary program.

RDP will also bestow an Honorary Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree upon an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of social, cultural or economic development that has had significant impact on the campus community, central Alberta and beyond. This recipient will provide a convocation address to graduates at both the morning and the afternoon ceremonies.

There will be a pair of ceremonies: one at 9:30 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m.
