Red Deer Public Schools will add a dance academy to its offerings in the 2023-24 school year.
The Academy of Dance at Westpark Middle School will be the first program offered in Red Deer Public’s new Academy of Arts.
Red Deer public will host an open house on March 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Westpark Middle School for all families interested in information about the program.
“We are excited to offer this new program to families this fall,” said Kelly Brand, Principal of Westpark Middle. “It allows us to enhance the great programming we already offer so our students can pursue their passions while also giving families more choice in education.”
The program is for current dancers in Grades 6-8 who want to take their technique and performance to the next level. The Academy of Dance will support dancers of all abilities to enhance their current practice.
According to a Red Deer public release, the Academy of Dance aims to enhance arts opportunities already offered within Red Deer Public while allowing students to more fully explore an area of passion during their school day.
The Academy of Dance will be housed out of Westpark Middle School and students will train at facilities at Red Deer Polytechnic. Like with Red Deer Public’s other Academy programs, students will experience a double block of dance, every second day for the whole year which will count as their Phys. Ed.
Students will have the opportunity to experience a variety of dance styles including Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Contemporary/Lyrical.
