Red Deer Public School teachers, administrators and staff are building leadership skills through a series of workshops.

The second installment of the Aspiring Leaders program, focusing on fostering effective relationships, was held on Jan. 11 and nearly 60 employees of the school district attended.

The aim was to create a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment by fostering effective relationships.

The session, titled Fostering Effective Relationships, allowed attendees to take part in an “empathy mapping exercise” that involved giving participants scenario in which they each had a role. Participants could then reflect on the series of events from various perspectives.

Associate Superintendent, Human Resources, Corrine Thorsteinson said empathy and compassion are key to relationship building. Successful leaders can rise to the occasion by finding positive ways to navigate through difficult or challenging conversations and situations.

“The result is meaningful connections which help us work towards solutions.”

More Aspiring Leaders sessions will take place throughout the rest of the school year. Thorsteinson said these sessions are a great opportunity for any Red Deer Public Schools employee to build or enhance leadership skills, or learn from and engage with colleagues who are interested in leadership.
