Red Deer RCMP Supt. and the officer in charge of the local detachment Gerald Grobmeier will retire this week.

Grobmeier has headed the Red Deer detachment since 2019. His RCMP career has spanned 29 years, the last six in Red Deer.

Grobmeier spearheaded Red Deer’s PINPOINT program, a crime reduction initiative designed to target prolific and repeat offenders. Under his leadership, the Red Deer detachment also launched the CAPTURE program, which allows residents and businesses to register security cameras and allow RCMP to request footage to assist with investigations, and Garage529, a bike registry designed to deter bike theft and ensure return of any bicycles which are stolen and recovered.

“I am proud to have seen the Red Deer detachment become a leader in the district, in the division and nationally,” said Grobmeier in a statement on Monday morning. “I am honoured to have served this wonderful community, and it has been a pleasure for my family and I to call Red Deer home.”

“Thank you, Supt. Grobmeier, for your leadership and service to our community,” said Ken McMullen, City of Red Deer general manager of development and protective services. “We are grateful for your dedication to Red Deer, working closely with the city and community partners to address the needs of our citizens and businesses.

“We are grateful for Superintendent Grobmeier’s service to our community and wish him all the best in his retirement,” said McMullen.

Through his time as officer in charge, Grobmeier helped Red Deer RCMP develop lasting relationships with many community groups, fostering an informed and shared approach to crime prevention initiatives and improving police connections within the community, says the city.

An interim officer in charge will be announced by RCMP until Grobmeier’s replacement is found.

Grobmeier followed Supt. Ken Foster, who joined the Red Deer detachment as officer in charge in August 2016 and resigned in February 2019.
