A downtown school was placed on alert briefly this morning after a report of a man nearby with what was believed to be a weapon.

Central Middle School was placed in a hold and secure mode, where they have a higher level of security but are able to go about their daily routine.

Red Deer RCMP, with the help of surveillance video, determined the report to be unfounded.

Once police were satisfied there was no threat to students or staff, the hold and secure order was lifted at the school.

Students and staff were never in any danger, police said.

The report came in at 8:30 a.m.
