The RCMP are looking into a collision that occurred between an ATV and a police vehicle early Tuesday.

In the late night hours on Monday, police observed an ATV, a motorcycle and a car driving carelessly and at high rates of speed through parking lots and city streets.

Police received several calls about these vehicles driving erratically.

At no time did the RCMP pursue any of the vehicles, due to concerns for public safety, say police.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday, the speeding ATV struck a police vehicle head on at the intersection of Taylor Drive and 67th Street.

The male driver suffered serious life-threatening injuries during the collision and was taken to hospital and then flown to Calgary via STARS air ambulance.

The RCMP officer suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital a short time later.

No charges have been laid at this time and police continue to investigate.
