In the first week of school, Red Deer RCMP issued 154 tickets, including 111 for speeding, as part of its annual back to school safety blitz.

“Speeding is a serious safety issue in Red Deer every day of the year, and these numbers really demonstrate that,” says Sgt. Mike Zufferli.

“The RCMP presence around schools is a reminder to drivers to follow posted speed limits and pay attention to the road, and we’re actively targeting speeders and distracted drivers.”

During the back to school traffic campaign, Red Deer RCMP also ticketed two distracted drivers who were using cellphones.

In other instances, a driver was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, a learner driver was driving without a supervisor, and one motorist was caught passing a vehicle in a school zone. Police also issued four seatbelt violations.
