More than $3,000 in gift cards and cash was stolen from a Red Deer business, and Mounties are warning businesses about the “quick change” scammers who they believe did it.

Police said a team of three males made off with the gift cards and cash from a local business on April 25. They employed what police call a “quick change” scam.

In the scam, the scammer makes a purchase and then asks retail staff for a specific combination of bills as their change. The scammers then “change their minds” and ask for a different combination of bills. They repeat the process until the staff person becomes confused and the scammer walks away with extra cash and the product.

Red Deer RCMP believe this team of three males may currently be travelling through the province, hitting multiple businesses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Red Deer RCMP at 403-343-5575 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or report it online at www.tipsubmit.com.
