The long-time Red Deer restaurant Rusty Pelican has closed its doors, but customers are encouraged to stay tuned for a new eatery with live music that will take its place.
The restaurant posted on Facebook Sunday evening that it was permanently closing after about 26 years.
It was the second Red Deer restaurant for chef Miro Crnkovic who opened Shauney’s Restaurant in 1982 and the Rusty Pelican about 15 years later.
The Rusty Pelican, located at 2079 50 Ave, was sold in September 2022 following Crnkovic’s death in September 2021.
“To our very special & precious guests, who so, so many of you became Miro and I’s good friends, who stood firmly holding us up through Covid closures and Miro becoming more & more ill, with your loyalty and sharing a part of your precious time with us, often times, every day. Many thanks for all that you shared with us, to the very many guests through our years, you will not be forgotten,” the post said.

The post went on to say a new, young, innovative group bought the property and to, “Stay tuned for exciting things to come in this building.”
Floor manager Sara Pyper said the restaurant closed after a slow Sunday, but a busy week. People were calling the Rusty Pelican a Red Deer landmark and were disappointed it was closing its doors. But a new restaurant will open in its place.
“We’re just not publicly announcing yet what that will be, and we’re hoping to open Mayish,” said Pyper, which will depend on shipping and renovations.
“People are really excited to see what’s coming. All of our regulars are like, “We’ll see you in a few months.”
She said live music had been performed at the Rusty Pelican for long time and there wasn’t a proper stage. Soon there will a stage for musicians.
“The establishment going in has live music every Friday so it will be really nice to see this room full again.”
