A Red Deer public school was one of three chosen from across Alberta for the expansion of an innovative mental health program for students.

Starting in February, CASA Mental Health classroom programs will begin operating in Escuela Vista Grande School in Red Deer — as well as in schools in Wetaskiwin and Medicine Hat.

This will increase the total number of Alberta schools operating CASA Mental Health Classrooms to eight, states a release from the provincial Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

These classroom programs are delivered by the non-profit organization CASA Mental Health to support students facing complex mental health challenges while they continue their education. Students receive in-class individual therapy, group therapy and psychiatric care to support their recovery.

CASA Mental Health classrooms can support up to 12 students per cohort from across the school district. In addition to a full-time teacher, each classroom is staffed with a mental health therapist, mental health aide and other support staff to ensure students can get the treatment they need to excel in their learning.

Chad Erickson, superintendent of Red Deer Public Schools, said he’s excited to partner with CASA Mental Health “as we continue our commitment to fostering supportive learning environments for all students.

“By providing a dedicated space for mental health resources, we aim to create an inclusive atmosphere where students can thrive emotionally, socially and academically,” added Erickson, who believes the initiative “reinforces our commitment to nurturing the holistic development of every student.”

According to the government release, CASA Mental Health Classrooms will expand to these three additional schools with an investment of $10 million this fiscal year. The goal is to have 12 more CASA Mental Health classrooms, through a $30 million funding injection over the next three years.

Dan Williams, minister of mental health and addiction said, “Expanding mental health programs like these classrooms is a priority for the province as we invest in prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery.”

The move was welcomed by Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides as well as Red Deer-North MLA Adriana LaGrange and Red Deer-South MLA Jason Stephan.

Stephan said, “Mental health for our children is a top priority for all of us, in particular parents. It can be very hard for parents supporting their children suffering with mental health challenges. I am grateful to see our government investing in supporting mental health of children and families in Red Deer school classrooms.”
