Red Deer schools added to COVID-19 alert and outbreak list

Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School has been added to a growing number of Red Deer schools with COVID-19 cases.

The high school added a new case this week and is now listed as an outbreak by Alberta Health, with between 5-9 cases. The school confirmed a new case in a letter to parents on Feb. 22.

St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School is in outbreak tier two, with more than 10 cases. They have shifted fully online until March 1. St. Joseph High School is also on the outbreak tier two list, with 10 or more cases.

St. Teresa of Avila School is also on the outbreak list with 5-9 cases.

St. Francis of Assisi, Father Henri Voisin, G.H Dawe Community School, Glendale Sciences and Technology School and St. Patrick’s Community school are all on alert with 2-4 cases.

According to Support Our Students, an online advocacy website for students, G.H. Dawe reported a COVID-19 case on Feb. 22. The website also listed a case at Ecole Barrie Wilson School on Feb. 19.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said Tuesday that there are active alerts or outbreaks in 231 schools, about 10 per cent of schools in the province. Those schools have a combined total of 846 cases since in-person classes resumed in January.
