Red Deer slammed by spring snow storm

Two semi trailers blocking traffic on Hwy 2 near Olds and Red Deer have been removed, but RCMP are still warning motorists to use extreme caution.

Roads in the Red Deer area are snow covered with icy sections and police advise drivers to delay travel until weather and road conditions improve.

Earlier this morning, Innisfail RCMP said travel was not recommended on Hwy 2 north and south of Bowden.

Road conditions are extremely poor, with snow covered areas and blowing snow in north and southbound lanes.

A tow advisory is in effect.

Environment Canada says wind and snow should taper off this afternoon.


9:30 a.m.

Red Deer RCMP are asking motorists to use caution on Hwy 2 between the 67th Street and the Hwy 11A overpass where a semi trailer is blocking one of the northbound lanes.

People should use extra caution when travelling in the area. A portion of the highway is expected to be shut down for some time while the trailer is towed.

Wind warning for: Red Deer - Ponoka - Innisfail - Stettler continued.

Northwesterly winds gusting to 100 km/h diminishing this evening.

An intense low pressure system over Southwestern Saskatchewan will continue to track southeastwards moving into North Dakota by the evening. Behind the low strong northwesterly winds are expected through much of Southern Alberta. Wind speeds of 70 gusting to 100 km/h will occur before gradually diminishing this evening.

About 10 to 15 cm of snow are forecast over the Cypress Hills. This snow will combine with strong northwesterly winds to occasionally reduce visibilities in blowing snow. Conditions here will improve overnight as snowfall and winds gradually taper off.

Strong winds are no longer forecast in Pincher Creek however with the passage of the low snow is expected to develop late today. Snowfall amounts of 10 cm are forecast near the international border. Snow will taper off Wednesday morning.
