Red Deer Sports and Outdoor Show returns for first time since 2020

Event is being held at Westerner Park from Friday to Sunday

The Red Deer Sports and Outdoor Show is set to return this weekend.

This year’s edition of the event will be held at Westerner Park’s Exhibition Hall from Friday to Sunday. This is the first time the event has been held since 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Red Deer Fish and Game Association has brought the show to central Alberta for more than 50 years. The event typically features about 75 vendors and 5,000 to 6,000 attendees.

Dave Drok, one of the show’s co-managers, said he expects to see similar numbers for this year’s event.

“Red Deer is very much a hunting, fishing, boating, outdoor kind of community. Lots of people grew up doing that stuff around here and continue to do it. This show seems to align very well with the demographic,” Drok said on Thursday.

The Red Deer Sports and Outdoor Show is a “key fundraiser” for the Red Deer Fish and Game Association, Drok noted.

“The proceeds from this show help fund numerous property and programs. We’ve got indoor and outdoor firearm ranges, we’ve got a habitat land, … fish ponds, camping, hiking trails, archery range, numerous outdoor family activities,” he said, adding one of the big goals for this year’s show is to build momentum for future events.

“People have been kind of slow to get back up and going (post-COVID). We had to work extra hard this year to sell out the show – we’re very happy we were able to do that,” he said.

During the event, attendees will be able to browse and buy products, from hunting and fishing accessories to white water rafting, RVs, boats, ATVs, scuba diving, golfing and more.

The show will feature free face painting, a Canadian reptile show presentation with snakes, lizards and more, and a beer gardens. Wes David, host of Fishing the Wild West TV, will be a guest speaker at the event as well.

Entry is $15 for adults, $12 for youths between 12 and 17, and free for children 11 and under.
