A Red Deer teen is currently in hospital after suffering a seizure in the shower and then getting severely burned by hot water.
On Monday, April 17, Erin Cornell woke up and heard rolling around. She went into the bathroom where she found her 13-year-old son, Dreyden Hiscock, laying on the floor of the shower. The belief is he experienced a seizure and then turned up the hot water while falling down.
“The skin on his back was almost completely gone. His whole left hand was pretty much peeled off,” said Cornell.
“He was seizing. He’s not epileptic, as far as we know. He doesn’t have any seizure history, so this just randomly happened. It took him quite a bit to snap out of it. I had 911 on the phone the whole time.”
After Hiscock came to, he went into shock, said Cornell.
“He had to be sedated quite heavily. Once we got to the (Red Deer) hospital, they had to incubate him and wrap him pretty much head to toe. They immediately called STARS (Air Ambulance) because it was so significant,” she said.
He was then rushed to Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, where he is currently recovering.
“He has significant burns to his left hand and his back. The burns on the ear and head are superficial, so they’re going to heal nicely. They did have to shave his head and he was absolutely devastated by that,” Cornell said.
Hiscock is an avid hockey player and fan. He currently plays in Red Deer Minor Hockey’s city league.
“He eats, breathes and sleeps hockey. Anyone who knows Dreyden knows he’s all about hockey,” said Cornell.
“When he woke up, the first thing he said was, ‘What day is it?’ I told him Monday and he got sad because the Oilers were starting the playoffs that day. The nurse was like, ‘It’s OK buddy, we’re going to put the game on.’ Then he gave a big thumbs up.”
A GoFundMe page has since been set up to support Hiscock. As of Friday, the online fundraiser has brought in more $5,000 to support the family.

“We’ve been getting amazing support. I’m originally from Grand Prairie, so we have that community rooting for us too, but it’s mostly Red Deer and the hockey families,” said Cornell.
“My husband is a hockey coach and we’re very active in the hockey community. If you know Red Deer Minor Hockey, then you know we’ve been getting taken care of by all the other families.”
Hiscock had brain scans done on Thursday and next week he will receive a skin graft on his back.
“I’m just happy he’s still here, he’s fine and he’s coherent,” said Cornell.
“As of right now, there’s nothing significant that’s come up on his brain scan. We’re hopeful that the rest of the tests will be the same.”
