The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit is investigating the alleged homicide of a two-year-old in Red Deer.

At about 9:30 a.m. this past Sunday, Red Deer RCMP were called to a city residence to assist Emergency Medical Services, as a two-year-old child had sustained critical injuries.

The child was transported to hospital, where they died as a result of the injuries.

Police arrested a woman at the residence. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over carriage of the investigation.

On Monday, a 30-year-old Red Deer woman was charged with first degree murder.

Police say the investigation indicates the woman and child knew each other, and the general public was not at risk. RCMP are not looking for any other suspects involved in the incident.

Due to a publication ban, the identity of the woman charged and the victim cannot be released.
