Beauty, balance, and ‘expressions of self’ have inspired the art displayed in Red Deer’s galleries throughout June.
From creative installations to ceramics, prints and drawings, the 15th Annual IB & AP Art Show is on at the Kiwanis Gallery, operated by the Red Deer Arts Council in the downtown public library.
The exhibit, which runs until June 18 features a wide array of mixed-media art from students from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and Hunting Hills High School. The show will be open later for a First Fridays Red Deer reception on June 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Down the street at Unit 6–4919 49 St., Save Us All, an exhibit by student artists of Artribute Art School, is showing at the Red Deer Arts Council Community Gallery for the month of June 1. There will be a reception on the First Fridays of June from 5– 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, at the Riverlands Studio and Gallery, Painting Home, art from Valerie Speer and Carol Lynn Gilchrist, can be seen at 5123 48 St., from June 1–28. These acrylic and oil “Prairie” paintings are about finding unexpected paths that lead to moments of joy and beauty. A June 2 reception will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Futility Index, featuring photos by Red Deer-area artist Emily Promise Allison, is showing at The Viewpoint Gallery, in the City of Red Deer’s Culture Services building, 5205 48 Ave. The show captures the limitations and possibilities of “intricate balance,” using found objects, and it runs to July 28. A First Friday reception will be held June 2 from 6 – 8pm. (An Artist Talk is at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9).
Expressions of Self: Art from The Hub is showing in the hallway of the YMCA Northside Community Centre, 6391-76 Street. The artists are participants in The Hub 2.0 Mixed Media Art Sessions. An opening reception will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 31 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the YMCA. (No First Friday reception.)
Continuing exhibitions around Red Deer, without First Friday receptions, include:
– The Nature of Variegation by Alison Forsberg, showing at the Velvet Olive Lounge, 4928C 50 St. Red Deer. These surreal landscape and animal works will be on display until June 20.
– Splendid Insects, mixed-media pieces by members from Red Deer Art Club, are on display at the Marjorie Wood Gallery at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre until June 28.
– Central Alberta at Play, works by the Central Alberta Photographic Society are on display in The Corridor Community Gallery, downstairs at the Red Deer Recreation Centre until Aug. 3.
