Organizers of the annual Red Deer Live Nativity Pageant are cancelling this year’s Christmas community play due to the ongoing pandemic.

The event, which includes a cast of 28 actors and a stunning display of hundreds of tiny nativity sets from around the world, has become an annual tradition in Red Deer.

In its place this year, community members are invited to view a nativity video found at thechristchild.org.

“It takes a tremendous amount of work to put the live Nativity Pageant and Crèche Display together, but we look forward to it every year,” says Douglas Higham, president of the Red Deer Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“It’s a reminder to us of the real reason for the Christmas season. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to abide by public health recommendations regarding social distancing with an event that involves so many volunteers and spectators. For the safety of all, we are cancelling this year’s event. We look forward to hosting it again in the future when it is safe to do so.”
