Calgary alt-folk/rock band Reuben and the Dark will feature some Blackfoot song and dance in a collaborative show in Red Deer next month.

Hitting the road with the Kainai-Blood Tribe’s Bullhorn Singers is part of building positive cross-cultural relationships, said the band in a release.“Collaborating with BullHorn has been such a beautiful experience. I get goosebumps everytime we play,” said Reuben Bullock, of Reuben and The Dark.

The April 6 show at Bo’s Bar and Stage is billed as a unique and powerful musical experience that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Kainai-Blood Tribe, with Reuben and the Dark’s signature sound.

As an Albertan, Bullock has always had a desire to learn more about Blackfoot culture and to build relationships, “and the fact we are able to come together through music now feels like such a gift,” he added.

If music can lead to healing, “these shows feel like medicine,” said Bullock, who noted future collaborations are in the works.

Curtis Running Rabbit-Lefthand, of AM Entertainment, who’s lead artist manager on the project, said the collaboration opens a door to building positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

“It offers us the opportunity to experience a new path to right relationships with music as its guide,” Running Rabbit-Lefthand states. “Experiencing this collaboration has changed my understanding of music and how I can better approach music as a means to examine the spirit and as a way of healing.”
