More spring-like temperatures could lead to a jump in crime in central Alberta.

Red Deer RCMP are warning the public to stay vigilant as warmer temperatures often bring an increase in vandalism, thefts and other property offences.

There has already been a recent spike in garage break-ins in March and early April.

Red Deer RCMP have investigated seven instances of vehicles ramming garage doors to gain access for theft.

“Property crimes and petty thefts typically jump up a bit once spring hits,” said Supt. Gerald Grobmeier, of the Red Deer detachment.

“We’re asking residents to take action to prevent crimes of opportunity, as many property crimes are easily preventable.”

Residents can easily make their properties less of a target for criminals, said Grobmeier.

“Simple things like landscaping, fences and lighting can have a huge impact in preventing crime,” he said.
