Rocky Mountain House RCMP joined forces with other units earlier this month as part of an operation focused on offenders with outstanding warrants.

The Feb. 6-10 initiative involved contributions from Alberta RCMP’s Air Services, Police Dog Services, Emergency Response Team, Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit, Traffic Services, as well as analysts and administrative support personnel.

Officers executed 78 outstanding warrants and arrested 40 people during the operation. In the process of locating individuals, officers recovered a stolen vehicle, seized a firearm and various types illegal drugs. Ten new charges were laid against offenders for various offences.

Kidnapping, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, and robbery were among the most serious charges.

RCMP arrested a 35-year-old O’Chiese First Nation man, who had outstanding warrants from a Sept. 1, 2022 incident in which he was accused of shooting the victim. He is facing charges of aggravated assault and failing to comply with release conditions in connection with that incident.

The suspect was located on Feb. 7 in the back seat of a vehicle with a small child. Police allege he gave a false name and had a can of dog deterrent spray in his hand at the time of his arrest.

Police also seized a small amount of methamphetamine and fentanyl. The suspect also faces charges of possession of a weapon fora dangerous purpose, obstruction and two counts of possession of drugs.

The accused was released from custody and is due in Rocky Mountain House court on Feb. 22.

“A ‘warrant round-up’ is an effective way for police to bring in additional resources to efficiently and safely locate and apprehend individuals,” said Rocky Mountain House RCMP detachment commander Staff Sgt. Carl Dinsdale.

“We are pleased with the results of this initiative which took a lot of planning and organization to bring together.”
