Rocky pondering urban chickens

Rocky Mountain House residents can join the urban chicken debate at an upcoming public hearing.

A bylaw that would allow homeowners to raise up to four chickens will go before council followed by possible second and third readings on July 8.

The Livestock Bylaw is designed to license and regulate hens.

A local chapter of CLUCK (Canadian Liberated Urban Chicken Klub) has been lobbying council to allow for backyard hens.

CLUCK’s Facebook page urges members to come out in support of the bylaw. The hearing is expected to revolve around zoning, lot sizes and how to get neighbour permission.

The City of Red Deer recently passed first reading of a chicken bylaw. The proposed bylaw would allow up to 65 annual chicken licences permitting a maximum of four chickens.

Red Deer council voted 6-2 last week in support of the new bylaw after a 2 1/2-year pilot that permitted raising chickens in the city.

Second and third reading of the proposed Red Deer chicken bylaw will be considered by council on July 7.
