Police are investigating an RCMP officer’s firing of a service pistol at a fleeing vehicle near Rocky Mountain House.

On Saturday, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer discharging a service weapon the previous day on the O’Chiese First Nation.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, March 16, members of the Rocky Mountain House RCMP detachment were pursuing a vehicle that had been reported stolen and had failed to stop for police.

After police laid a spike belt across the road, one member of the RCMP fired his service pistol at the vehicle. Officers found the vehicle and later arrested a 28-year-old man, who was believed to be driving. The man appeared unhurt.

ASIRT’s investigation continues. No further information will be released until the investigation is concluded.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently, and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person.

For the purposes of this latest incident, this includes officer-involved shootings that would have likely resulted in serious injury or death if anyone was struck.
