Runaway wheel churns up concern after ripping into Calgary neighbourhood

Residents of three Calgary homes were left shaken after a big tire believed to have come off a semi crashed through their yards and destroyed some of their property.

CALGARY — Residents of three Calgary homes were left shaken after a big tire believed to have come off a semi crashed through their yards and destroyed some of their property.

The families say a loud crashing sound could be heard Thursday when the wheel took only seconds to slam through their fences along Stoney Trail in the north-end neighbourhood of Coventry Hills.

The tire broke a trampoline and crushed a playhouse before coming to a stop after hitting an iron gate.

A number of people were in their backyards at the time, including a mother with her baby, but there were no reports of injuries.

Police needed help to haul the tire away, but say that unless they track down the vehicle it came from there’s not much they can do.

Area resident Reid Stegemann says a concrete barrier is needed to protect homeowners from mishaps such as this one. (Global Calgary)
