A popular private campground near Sylvan Lake is doubling its sites to meet demand.
Summerland Leisure Park, located just south of the Summer Village of Gull Lake, will add 30 more full-service RV lots to bring the total up to 60.
Summerland owners Brian and Lynn Henkel also plan to build two new washroom and shower facilities, a swimming pool, playground and additional parking in the upgrades expected to begin later this year or early next year.
Lynn Henkel said RV sites are in short supply in the area.
“There are more campers than there are sites for them,” she said, shortly after Lacombe County’s municipal planning commission approved their expansion proposal.
“During the summer on long weekends we probably turn away 150,” she said. “Everything around the lake is full, full, full.”
The campground draws a lot of drop-in visitors because of its 18-hole miniature golf course and driving range.
