Two of the three men who pleaded guilty to attacking an RCMP officer and stealing a police vehicle on December 2019 are scheduled to be sentenced later this fall.

Chasetin Morin and Johnathan Andrews were in Red Deer Provincial Court Thursday to have sentencing submissions heard on their guilty pleas to charges of robbery (of a police vehicle) and disarming or attempting to disarm a peace officer.

That sentencing submission appearance has now been pushed back to Sept. 27 at 2 p.m., with a sentencing decision scheduled for Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.

The third man involved in the incident, Levi Bennink, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four years on Nov. 9, 2021.

On Dec. 13, 2019, a Blackfalds RCMP officer stopped to help three men on an isolated rural road in Red Deer County at about 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 13, 2019.

That officer, Const. Lottie Bell, testified in December 2021 that she feared for her life when she was jumped by the three men.

Bell was thrown to the ground by Andrews when she pulled over to assist the men. Andrews and Morin then got on top of the five-foot-two, 130-pound officer and tried to pry her gun out of its holster.

The officer his the emergency button on her radio before Binnink ripped the cord out. He also pulled a microphone linked to her cruiser’s video system off of her coat and threw it away.

The three ran away after being unable to get her gun and stole her police vehicle, which was parked on Range Road 10 near Burnt Lake Trail, which is about 10 kilometres west of Red Deer.

Bell fired her gun as the vehicle drove past her. Bennink was wounded in the calf – Andrews was hit in the foot, but the bullet did no penetrate his skin.

Soon after, the vehicle ran off of the road and the three men were tracked down by a police dog. They were then arrested.
