Two people have died and three were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a chain-reaction collision on Highway 1, west of Calgary on Wednesday morning.
Cochrane RCMP said a cube van was eastbound on Highway 1, west of Morley Road, when it veered through the median and into the westbound lanes around 11:20 a.m.
The cube van collided head-on with a white car. Simultaneously, a westbound semi was unable to avoid the collision and rear-ended the white car. A westbound cube van then struck the semi.
Two occupants of the white car have died, said police. Three additional patients, the driver and passenger of the eastbound cube van, and the driver of the westbound cube van, were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
RCMP collision analysts are on scene. Traffic continues to be rerouted away from the area through Morley Road to Highway 1A, said RCMP in an update about 3:20 p.m.
Traffic was expected to be impacted for the next several hours and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
Police said no information on the deceased will be released until next of kin are notified.
