Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Red Deer and central Alberta.
The department said conditions are favourable for storms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.
Thunderstorms were expected to develop along the central and northern foothills Friday afternoon and track eastwards through the Edmonton region. A few of these thunderstorms were likely to become severe.
Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year — when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
