Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Red Deer

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain, says Environment Canada.

As of 10:27 a.m. on Thursday, a severe thunderstorm is in effect for communities in Central Alberta, including Red Deer, Lacombe and Stettler.

“Thunderstorms are expected over much of southern and Central Alberta today. Some of these thunderstorms will become severe,” said Environment Canada.

“Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.”

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
