A severe thunderstorm watch was issued today for Red Deer and central Alberta, along with a severe thunderstorm warning for the Rocky Mountain House and Caroline area.

Environment Canada says a warning is issued when thunderstorms are imminent or occurring. The severe thunderstorm is located near Brazeau Reservoir and is moving northeast at 20 km/h.

A watch is issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms late this afternoon for Red Deer and central Alberta that may be capable of producing heavy rain, strong wind gusts and large hail.

Thunderstorms are forecast to develop along the foothills this afternoon and then move northeastward. The risk of severe weather is expected to persist into the evening hours.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Environment Canada says severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.
