Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Red Deer and some parts of central Alberta

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of central Alberta including Red Deer.

The alert is in effect for parts of County of Stettler, Lacombe County, Ponoka County and Red Deer County.

The Environment Canada website states conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Strong thunderstorms are expected to develop over central and southern Alberta this afternoon. These storms will dissipate later this evening. The main threats from these storms will be large hail and wind gusts to over 100 km/h. There may also be localized heavy rain.

The forecast for Red Deer Wednesday shows a 60 per cent chance of showers late this afternoon with winds becoming north km.h gusting to 40 this afternoon.

Wednesday night will be mainly cloudy with 60 per cent chance of showers.

Red Deerians can expect a sunny day Thursday with a high of 22 C.
