Environment Canada says a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Red Deer and central Alberta.

”Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” Environment Canada said Saturday afternoon.

“Thunderstorms will develop in some parts of central Alberta this afternoon, and some thunderstorms could become severe. The watches may be expanded eastwards later in the day.”

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.

“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors,” said Environment Canada.
