A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Red Deer and much of the rest of central Alberta.

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain, Environment Canada said Wednesday afternoon.

“Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes,” said the federal agency.

“Severe thunderstorms with hail as large as golf balls and strong winds exceeding 100 km/h are possible late this afternoon. These severe storms are likely to persist into the late evening hours,” says the agency.

Large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury.

Strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road.
