An Edmonton police officer is in hospital and a civilian is dead after both were shot during a traffic stop on Monday night.

EDMONTON — An Edmonton police officer is in hospital and a civilian is dead after both were shot during a traffic stop on Monday night.

Police say the wounded officer is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say at about 9:30 p.m., a citizen called them about a possible impaired driver.

Officers stopped a suspect vehicle and police say shots were fired during a “confrontation with the members.”

Police say they won’t comment further now that the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over the investigation.

No names have been released.
