Liyan Zhang of Edmonton sits on Gull Lake at Parkland Beach Area, about 400 metres from the shore. At this point, he’d had no nibbles, but he was just happy to be out on a pleasant day this week after the recent cold snap. Zhang said part of the allure of ice fishing is it represents a day away from the big city. All his equipment is homemade, from the sleigh to the rod holders, and the hole in the ice is chopped with an axe, not drilled. He said fishing without a tent is just like he did in China before coming to Canada.
