The Mustard Seed in Red Deer got a sizable gift of food to help local families in need.

And the charity intends to share the bounty with the Red Deer Food Bank.

Calgary company Sysco delivered six pallets of fruit and vegetables to Red Deer’s The Mustard Seed.

The agency can use the produce as it runs a 46-bed homeless shelter and makes 2,300 lunches a week for children from disadvantaged families.

The food bank will also be able to distribute some of the donated groceries to its clients, some of whom are now temporarily out of work because of COVID-19.

Scott Tilbury, fund development officer for The Mustard Seed, said Sysco called last week wanting to donate the pallets of fresh produce.

“We immediately called the food bank to see if they would be able to receive the donation, to store and help get the food into the hands of those in need,” he said.

Tilbury feels the donation “will play a critical role in helping vulnerable families and our guests get through this pandemic.”

“Can you believe it? …A very big thank you to Sysco for donating this produce to our families in need,” stated The Mustard Seed through social media.
