The Royal Canadian Air Force’s Snowbirds team has landed in Red Deer.

The military air demonstration squadron will be taking to the sky as part of the Red Deer Regional Airshow this weekend.

“We have a show in every province this year,” said Capt. Richard MacDougall, an advance and safety pilot with the Snowbirds.

“We’re happy to come here (to Red Deer). A lot of our friends are here working and part of the organizing committee, so it feels a bit like a family show for us.”

The Snowbirds are comprised of Canadian Armed Forces members and National Defence Public Service employees.

The team will have performances on Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re here doing our full aerobatics show. You’ll see a lot of formation changes, you’ll see different split manoeuvres and bursts,” MacDougall explained.

“It’s a bit of a dance and a bit of a timing challenge to do manoeuvres like the kaleidoscope, the heart and a lot of different splits that I think will be good to see here in Red Deer this weekend.”

Meanwhile, Red Deer County is advising people that there will be parking restrictions, road closures and traffic details during both days of the airshow.

“Residents (of Springbrook) may experience traffic delays along Airport Drive due to higher than normal traffic volumes,” the county warned in a press release.

“To avoid delays along Airport Drive and 34 Avenue, recommended access to residential areas in Springbrook is through Tamarac Boulevard. Springbrook residents are also encouraged to display an airshow resident parking pass if parked on the street for easy identification; a map showing the location of restricted parking in Springbrook is attached.”

During the air show there will be a few road closures from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.:

  • Township Road 372 between Airport Drive and C&E Trail
  • Range Road 281 from Township Road 372 to Highway 592
  • Range Road 282 from Township Road 372 to Highway 592

Anyone with questions or concerns regarding the airshow, including regarding tickets, parking, Springbrook resident parking passes and vendors, is asked to contact Nancy Paish at the Red Deer Regional Airport by calling 403-352-1908 or eamiling n.paish@flyreddeer.com.
